Subject Guides Books Reading Lists Knitting

Nonfiction titles about knitting, selected by Forbes Library librarians. July 2011.

  • Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitter's Almanac : Projects For Each Month of the Year
Although the title suggests that this might be just a book of patterns, the Knitter's Almanac contains as much commentary and reflection as it does instructions. Zimmermann also does a great job of discussing those technical aspects of knitting that do not fit well in patterns, including calculating gauge and modifying existing designs. WUAK.Z65kn 1981

  • A History of Hand Knitting by Richard Rutt
A very enjoyable book, A History of Hand Knitting tells the story of knitting, with an emphasis on knitting in the British Isles. We learn about textiles that resemble but predate knitting, about early knitting tools and techniques, about the economics of knitting throughout history, and about the various conceptual leaps which occurred as knitting evolved. (Did you know that flat knitting is a relatively recent invention and that all early knitting was done in the round?) WUAK.R937h

  • Things I Learned From Knitting: Whether I Wanted to or Not by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee
A small, humorous book. There are no patterns here, or knitting techniques. It's not a book for those who want to learn about knitting, but for those who already knit and enjoy reading about knitters. WUAK.P316t 2008

  • Sweater Quest: My Year of Knitting Dangerously by Adrienne Martini
A memoir detailing Martini's year knitting a complicated Fair Isle sweater and her attempt to answer the question, "Why do we knit?" Martini speaks with knitting designers and authors, visits a sheep and wool festival, and reflects on her own feelings about knitting. WUAK.M336s 2010

  • The art of Fair Isle knitting : history, technique, color & patterns by Ann Feitelson
A beautiful book, with very attractive patterns, what makes this book special is its section on the history of Fair Isle knitting, including historical photographs. WUAK.F327a

  • The opinionated knitter : Elizabeth Zimmermann newsletters 1958-1968
More writings by Elizabeth Zimmermann. This collection includes many patterns and essays not found elsewhere, in Zimmermann's matter of fact, conversational style. WUAK.Z65o 2005
