NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The Northampton Lions Club presented life-saving devices to two libraries in town.

The life-saving device that was donated is called an automated external defibrillator. Forbes and Lilly Library in Northampton received this AED device with the help of the local fire department and the Northampton Lions Club.

This was part of an effort to help those who may experience sudden cardiac arrest. According to the American Red Cross, this medical device can analyze the heart’s rhythm and if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart get its rhythm back.

Patrick Diggins with the Northampton Lions Club told 22News that these devices are essential to have in public buildings.

“We thought a library should be a great spot to have this for all these people that come to use the library that it should be present in case something happens, they would be able to take care of them and save somebody,” said Diggins.

If someone is suffering from cardiac arrest health officials recommend that people use an AED every time that they provide CPR because it can double or triple the person’s chance of survival.
