Grasshopper Sparrow

watercolor, 8″ x 8″ (from public domain image USFWS National Digital Library; image by Flanders, Aron, USFWS)

I feel most at home when I am surrounded by nature or creating artwork in response to it. The little Grasshopper Sparrow painting was inspired by my partner. It is his favorite bird and it is a bird that is rarely seen in Massachusetts. It is believed that this is due in part to the loss of the Grasshopper Sparrow’s grassland habitat. It is losing “home” here, but this painting shows resilience. I like making work that reminds me that I share this big home, the earth, with so many beings that are just beyond my door’s threshold.
