Goldfinches

11″ x 14″, watercolor

The pandemic has caused a shift in my usual routine, from the wider social world of events, gatherings, goings on about town, to a very limited and introspective one of being primarily in my quiet home, just my husband and me.

With masks a necessity when interacting with anyone other than podmates, the value of being outside becomes significant and represents freedom and some sense of normalcy.

Additionally, I have been thinking a lot about the world and my place in it.

This past summer I turned to my garden as a source of renewal and delight. I am fortunate to have a small parcel of land on which to grow flowers, herbs and vegetables. I am concerned about the impact of climate change on wildlife and hope to create a haven for them. When the finches arrived to feed on the sunflower seeds, I felt joy to see their flashes of brilliant yellow and watch their antics.

The natural world has always been a wonder to me and an inspiration for my art.
My home is this world; I must and will responsibly care for the small place where I reside.
