\nSeeking rest, food, shelter
\nFrom unfavorable winds and storms,
\nThey leave traces of themselves in the fields.
\nFeathers, like discarded and worn out boots,
\nAre stuck in the mud and hidden under leaves,
\nLost in the scramble
\nTo stay alive another day.
\nThe body that wore them, continuing
\nOn the long journey toward finding real refuge,
\nA place where a familiar language is spoken
\nAnd the food eaten tastes like home.<\/p>\n
\nWith binoculars and scope.
\nI search for what is invisible to my eye
\nLike an innocent bystander.
\nI watch as a peregrine falcon
\nSearches relentlessly for its next meal
\nAnd as the fields get sprayed by
\nMonster farm machinery.
\nThe transiting sandpipers
\nForage together, take flight in fear, then land
\nOver and over again
\nExpending their stores of energy.
\nI listen to their cries
\nAnd bear witness to their passage,
\nRecording their identities
\nSo all may know they were here.<\/p>\n
\nBringing people here
\nWho are treated as chaff in an inhumane wind.
\nI am left to read news accounts
\nLike it is all happening to someone else
\nIn a separate country
\nIn a foreign land.<\/p>\n
