My old middle school still smells the same
\nRotten milk from the time that kid left his hot chocolate in his locker for too long
\nEven though it\u2019s smaller
\nEven though I\u2019m not there
\nLife moves on when you\u2019re not around to watch it happen
\nIt takes four times
\nFor me to feel okay going somewhere
\nFour times
\nTo recognize where to put my bag and where the trash can is
\nI\u2019m lucky
\nI\u2019m so friggen lucky
\nThat I don\u2019t know how to pack my things very well
\nThat I know what my mom\u2019s blueberry muffins smell like
\nAnd when the wind hits the side of my house I don\u2019t shiver

\nSo then why do I feel caged in my room with the green shag carpet
\nAnd exposed anywhere else
\nWhy do I rub my cheek against the side of my mask for comfort in my new high school
\nThat I never got to know properly
\nAnd now I\u2019m leaving
\nWhy do I always feel like I\u2019m forgetting something every time I pull out of the driveway
\nIf this isn\u2019t what safety is
\nThen what is it?
\nSometimes I wonder if I should be paying my mom
\nFor the smell of her baking in the oven
\nI\u2019ve only known one home because I\u2019m so friggen lucky
\nAnd yet I wonder if I can even call it mine
\nI\u2019ve shaken the walls one too many times not to wonder if they\u2019ll just fall down on me
\nAnd I\u2019ll deserve it
\nBut I\u2019m grateful
\nBecause I have to be
\nBecause next year I\u2019ll be alone in a dorm listening to linoleum and the sound of my roommate snoring
\nAnd probably crying myself to sleep
\nWhile I miss a place like this
\nA place that will still be standing
\nBuffeted by the wind
\nAnd aching with the memory of me

\nThat I got to spend so much time there
\nThat my essence steeped into the hardwood floor
\nLike that rancid milk hallway
