They<br \/>\ncontrolled counters, cabinets<br \/>\nrefrigerator shelves.  Voices<br \/>\nand footsteps filled the air,<br \/>\ntheir friends lolled on sofas,<br \/>\nkitchen chairs; their showers<br \/>\nleft hers tepid. <\/p>\n<p>Living in that foreign land, she<br \/>\nmerely withdrew.  It was easier<br \/>\nto make herself scarce: retreat<br \/>\nupstairs, eat in her room, slip<br \/>\nthrough the front door without<br \/>\nnotice.
