Early morning corner table
\nespresso, small square sugar cookie
\nsome sweet with my bitter<\/p>\n
Bike commuters elegantly navigate this stone corner
\nthree grey cobblestone streets intersecting
\nBerliners intent on their mission, no joy rides here<\/p>\n
One street sweeps upward mostly residential
\none parallels the cemetery leading to the market hall
\none leads back to my son and his family
\nmezuzah on their doorpost<\/p>\n
What footprints have been left here –
\ntrying not to see what these streets have seen
\nI stumble on the slightly raised brass paving stones
\nnaming the victims of imaginable evil<\/p>\n
Speaking stones?
\nI cover my ears just in case<\/p>\n
Across the street park guests stir on their benches
\nelbows and knees sculpting blankets<\/p>\n
Slightly disoriented, I check World Clock on my phone-
\nthe usual suspects – San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, Moscow, Beijing
\nsecond hands all the same of course
\nmoving steadily across faces all different <\/p>\n
Eight billion synchronized commuters
\npedaling while hands juggle seconds
\nfearful of dropping even one<\/p>\n
Traveling together through darkness and light
\neach of us hoping to make it back home
\nwhere our mothers, all master bakers,
\nwill feed us warm bread <\/p>\n
