Position Title: Adult Services Librarian (arts and music focus)

Supervisor: Head of Adult Services

Salary and benefits:

  • Grade 9 ($35,958-$45,333/year), 30 hrs/week including one evening per week and one Saturday per month

The Adult Services Librarian provides professional assistance, information, and materials to library patrons and supports programming and community engagement, with a focus on arts, music, and media. They provide easy access to and engagement with all kinds of creative culture, fostering a community rich in curiosity, free inquiry, lifelong learning, expression and enjoyment. Strong customer service, communication, and technological skills are required, as well as adaptability, flexibility, and creativity. 

Essential Functions

      May include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide direct patron service for Adult Services areas with a focus on Arts & Music, including research assistance and technology support and instruction
  • Provide readers’/viewers’/listeners’ advisory service; explore new advisory opportunities to promote collections, programs, and services, through newsletters, displays, social media, and other strategies
  • Develop, present, and promote diverse and inclusive public programs, especially arts and music-themed events, in person, virtual and hybrid
  • Provide support for Hosmer Art Gallery exhibits, events, and promotions
  • Member of website development team; maintain and update library’s web presence
  • Support community engagement through outreach to community spaces and networking; develop collaborative partnerships with community organizations, particularly arts and music organizations
  • Participate in circulating collection management, including Musical Library of Things
  • Participate in library committees and working groups
  • Train and supervise work study students, volunteers, and part-time staff
  • Grant writing and management
  • Assume role of department head in their absence
  • Other duties as assigned


Skills and Experience:

Required:

MLS (Masters in Library Science) and experience working with the public at a busy public library. Strong customer service, creativity and self-motivation, independent thinking and initiative, strong communication skills and flexibility and adaptability to change. Knowledge of and interest in music and art.

Preferred: 

  • Experience with graphic design and marketing, and the ability to create effective and visually appealing promotional materials
  • Experience with WordPress website design and management
  • Interest in Local History and historic documents, including images and audio
  • Bilingual with fluency in one of the following languages: Spanish/French/Arabic/ASL

Level of exertion from state definition: Light – Walking or standing frequently, using physical controls while sitting or driving, or working at a production rate pace with lighter materials. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally; or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. Ability to work around dust, mold, adhesives and other potential allergens.
