Get a library card

Most Massachusetts residents, including students, are entitled to a free library card1. If you already have a current library card from a qualifying public library in C/W MARS you may use your existing card to borrow materials at Forbes Library.

If you are not eligible for a free library card you may purchase a card for an annual fee of $35.

How to apply

You will require:

  • A photo ID
  • Proof of address

If possible, please ask for an application at the main desk. If you are unable to visit the library in person to obtain a library card, contact or call 413-587-1017 to request an application be mailed.

You may also apply for a temporary library card online. Your temporary card will provide access to place holds, and online resources such as e-books, e-audio and databases.

Replacement cards

Replacements for lost cards cost $2.

Using your card online

You can log into your library card online and see what you have out, renew books, reserve items to be held for you, or sign up to keep lists of things you’ve borrowed or want to remember for later.

Card expiration

Library cards expire periodically to allow us to verify current information. Learn more at our page about renewing your library card.

Any resident of a Massachusetts community which is certified by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners is entitled to a free library card.
