Spinning Silver

Spinning Silver is a fairy-tale inspired fantasy set in Lithvas, a fictional country with with elements of Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian history and culture. The kingdom is ruled by a tsar….omen in the story, are all remarkable for their cool level-headedness and practical outlook. Whether trading in the market, bargaining with an otherworldly ice king, exorcising a demon, or deciding whether or not to accept the hand of suitor, these women stand up for themselves and make careful, calculated decisions. In Spinning Silver these well reasoned decisions and difficult compromises are celebrated and, at least in Miryem’s case, elevated t…

Foreigner: A Novel of First Contact

The subtitle of C. J. Cherryh’s novel Foreigner is “a Novel of First Contact”. The novel begins with a brief prelude in which a starship is flung off course and and…onage, and uncertain alliances, and his internal monologues as he tries to make sense of his increasingly incomprehensible situation. Suddenly, things are changing very rapidly. Bren is the only human with a chance of comprehending what the changes mean to the Atevi. Is Bren the world’s only hope at keeping peace? Foreigner is the first novel in a long series (nineteen novels have been published so far) and is perfect for folks that like long char…

Nimona

Ballister Blackheart, a kind-hearted supervillain, gains a new sidekick when Nimona, a shapeshifter in the (sometimes) shape of a young girl, simply insists. Nimona seems to be interested only in…ed pasts. Noelle Stevenson’s graphic novel, first released as a webcomic, is a delightful read. The artwork is inviting with simple expressive lines, and beautiful colorwork in a subdued palate. Nimona can be a mouse or a lion, a boy or a girl, a squirrel or a dragon. This makes for a very fun to read comic, as we learn to recognize Nimona in her many forms, and of course Nimona’s shape shifting comes in handy in the pair’s many schemes. The story…

The long earth

As a longtime Pratchett fan, I was looking forward to a fantasy full of humor and parody.  This isn’t it, but I’ve been drawn in and am still reading.  Stephen…tep between worlds by building a “stepping” box so simple any teenager can make one. Large numbers of people begin popping back and forth, creating complex consequences and changing the world(s) in ways that no one can keep up with. I’m enjoying interesting characters such as 13-year-old Joshua, who is more comfortable in the primordial forest of other Earths than in his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin, and a computer in the shape of a vending mach…

Judex

I tend to be someone who knows what he’s looking for in the stacks and will often go in with a list. We can’t always be a slave to structure…ists and turns, masks, hidden identities, a circus, knives and a lovable detective color this suspenseful caper. Furthermore, Judex is photographed in the most brilliant black and white with stylish camera angles that would make any film nerd’s heart have serious palpitations. It pays to sometimes take chances with movies; going in blindly. However, I’ve done the work for you already on this one. So, go ahead and enjoy George Franju’s Judex!…

California Split

George Segal and Elliott Gould star in California Split, my all time favorite Robert Altman film and one of the best from the 1970’s. This dark, buddy comedy is centered…debt to his bookie, he sells off several possessions so he and Charlie can make an all-in trek to Reno. They eventually find themselves in a tacky casino and in a dramatic, high stakes poker match. Segal and Gould are the ultimate on screen duo with a perfect comedic volley and excellent chemistry. Additionally, this 1974 movie comes in when Altman was on top of his creative game. The director’s signature usage of wide range audio recording gives…

Finely illustrated and impeccably researched, the book is a rich tapestry of the many lives whose fates crossed in the neighborhood in the 110+ years before she purchased the house in 1983. The subjects range from working class families and Olympic athletes to Lewis Warner, the President of the Hampshire County National Bank who suddenly absconded…
