The Forbes Library opened in 1894, as a result of a bequest by Judge Charles Edward Forbes, who wished to build a public library for the citizens of Northampton. The…-story stone building, which is on the Register of Historic Buildings, was designed by William Brocklesby to be completely fire proof with all steel framing and stone, slate, and copper exterior. In 2020 we unveiled a new mural in the Children’s restroom, designed by the amazing local author and illustrator Jeff Mack. The mural depicts the five early literacy practices that are described in the Every Child Read to Read® program: Read, Write, Sing, Talk, and Play. Forbes Library Established BIPOC Art Fund

May 10, 2021 — Forbes Library has established a fund to acquire artwork by local and regional BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) artists. The fund was the result of a $10,000 anonymous donation…nd the collection to include works by BIPOC artists from our region,” said Russell Carrier, chair of the newly formed selection committee and President of the Trustees of Forbes Library.
